IP-UDP-Ethernet packet
In an embedded system, I am trying to make it so that an error that occurs before the system is running is sent out over the ethernet in a "pre-fabricated" UDP packet - with a broadcast ethernet address, but a specific IP address. It seems that Windows NT (I haven't tried any others) doesn't pass it through because

Block arp packets on Catalyst switch
It seems that ifconfig (from net-tools 1.60) will automatically assign an ipv6 address to my ethernet interface when I configure it for an ipv4 address, whether I want one or not. Ie the command: ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.1.10 up will cause both the ipv4 address and also an ipv6 address to materialise on eth0.

ARP Questions & Answers
Here's a method to set the ethernet address that I have used to reset it on my Indy after a run-away kernel scribbled on it. All disclaimers apply yadda yadda. dump -w -x 0xbfbe04e8 Sanity check the output here to see if it matches the address given in the 'ec0: bad ethernet address' error message.

However I wonder how an Ethernet card reacts to such a packet. There are two possiblities. 1. The Ethernet card hardware recognizes the Ethernet address in the packet. It ignores the packet when the address doesn't match. 2. The Ethernet card generates an interrupt whenever a packet arrives.

[OT] Interrogate network for devices
How does ARP resolve an IP address to an Ethernet MAC address? When ARP needs to resolve a given IP address to Ethernet address, it broadcasts an ARP request packet. The ARP module resolves the IP address specified in the packet to its Ethernet address. This step seems to be inappropriate.
